Cannes 2011 Red Carpet: Days 3-5 Best Dressed

Every day  we have started the Cannes best dressed feedback with a string of white frocks - and we will get to that today - but let's go to the dark side and see what the ladies pulled out of the little black dress bag. Uma Thurman continues her reign as the queen of the Cannes 2011 red carpet. It's not so much that her dresses are dazzlers (though some are) it is just that she is so beautiful and she is dressing simply and elegantly to compliment her looks. Super classy stuff. And it really works.
The delight that is Elizabeth Olsen wore outfits from The Row, designed by her sisters, and was as lovely as ever, and Rosario Dawson looked super in her slinky black gown. I am seldom disappointed by what Rosario wears. But she plays slightly under the radar which is why we seldom feature her. But I like her all the more for it. Tricky.
The white lacy dress selection from this past weekend contains few surprises with both Uma Thurman and Elizabeth Olsen championing the look. Just gorgeous. Astrid Berges-Frisbey from Pirates of the Caribbean also looked delightful in her white dress and red shoes. This white lacy dress thing is so prevalent that it has become something of a no brainer when thinking about outfits for next summer. It is almost, just almost, too much and it will be interesting to see if it has the legs to be this popular and still make it through another six months as a trend without us tiring of it.
And then there were the rest. Purple shades are also popular as we discussed last week and both Fan Bing Bing and Sarah Jessica Parker embraced that hue. If I am really honest, this was the only one of SJP's looks that I could get on board with this past week. I mean, there have been some shockers to be fair. And this is a woman who really could wear any dress in the world. Sigh. But Diane Kruger (despite the devotion from her man Pacey Witter) still manages to make it all seem alright. She is like an ice sorbet in a sea of sludge. Beautiful, of course, but also cute and fresh and quirky and fun. And natural and totally her. Oh bother. I do believe I like her.
PS: You will notice that there are many, many dresses from Cannes not shown on the blog. This is generally because I don't like them, you see. Especially all those frocks worn by Penelope Cruz. I'm not sure why, but they just stick in my throat. Oh well.
